Indication for Floxacillin

Population group: only adolescents (12 years - 18 years old) , adults (18 years old or older)
Therapeutic intent: Preventive action

Flucloxacillin is indicated for use as a prophylactic agent during major surgical procedures when appropriate; for example cardiothoracic and orthopaedic surgery.

For this indication, competent medicine agencies globally authorize below treatments:

1-2 g followed by 500 mg six hourly up to 72 hours

Dosage regimens

Regimen A: Intravenous, between 1 grams floxacillin and 2 grams floxacillin, daily, one dose. Afterwards, intravenous, 500 milligrams floxacillin, 4 times daily, over the duration of 3 days.

Regimen B: Intravenous, between 1 grams floxacillin and 2 grams floxacillin, daily, one dose. Afterwards, intramuscular, 500 milligrams floxacillin, 4 times daily, over the duration of 3 days.

Regimen C: Intravenous, between 1 grams floxacillin and 2 grams floxacillin, daily, one dose. Afterwards, oral, 500 milligrams floxacillin, 4 times daily, over the duration of 3 days.

Detailed description

During surgical prophylaxis, doses of 1 to 2g should be given intravenously at induction of anaesthesia followed by 500mg six hourly intravenously or intramuscularly.
