Active Ingredient: Floxacillin

Indication for Floxacillin

Population group: only infants (40 days - 1 year old) , children (1 year - 12 years old) , adolescents (12 years - 18 years old) , adults (18 years old or older)
Therapeutic intent: Curative procedure

Flucloxacillin is indicated for the treatment of infections due to penicillinase producing staphylococci and other gram positive organisms susceptible to this anti-infective.

Indications include: osteomyelitis and endocarditis.

For this indication, competent medicine agencies globally authorize below treatments:

1-12 g daily in divided doses

For:

Dosage regimens

Regimen A: Intravenous, in total between 1 grams floxacillin and 6 grams floxacillin, daily, 3 to 6 doses in total. The maximum allowed total dose is 12 grams floxacillin daily.

Regimen B: Intramuscular, in total between 1 grams floxacillin and 6 grams floxacillin, daily, 3 to 6 doses in total. The maximum allowed total dose is 12 grams floxacillin daily.

Regimen C: Intravenous, in total 8 grams floxacillin, 3 to 4 doses in total.

Regimen D: Intrapleural, 250 milligrams floxacillin, once daily.

Regimen E: Intra-articular, between 250 milligrams floxacillin and 500 milligrams floxacillin, once daily.

Regimen F: Respiratory (Inhalation), between 125 milligrams floxacillin and 250 milligrams floxacillin, 4 times daily.

Detailed description

The usual adult dosage (including the elderly) is as follows:

By intramuscular injection: 250mg every six hours.

By slow intravenous injection or by infusion: 250mg to 1g every six hours.

These doses may be doubled in severe infections. Doses of up to 8g daily have been suggested for endocarditis or osteomyelitis.

During surgical prophylaxis, doses of 1 to 2g should be given intravenously at induction of anaesthesia followed by 500mg six hourly intravenously or intramuscularly.

By intrapleural injection: 250mg once daily.

By intra-articular injection: 250mg to 500mg once daily.

By nebuliser: 125mg to 250mg every six hours.

0.75-2 g daily in divided doses

For:

Dosage regimens

Regimen A: Intramuscular, in total between 25 milligrams floxacillin per kilogram of body weight and 50 milligrams floxacillin per kilogram of body weight, daily, 3 to 4 doses in total.

Regimen B: Intravenous, in total between 25 milligrams floxacillin per kilogram of body weight and 50 milligrams floxacillin per kilogram of body weight, daily, 3 to 4 doses in total.

Regimen C: Intramuscular, in total 100 milligrams floxacillin per kilogram of body weight, daily, 3 to 4 doses in total.

Regimen D: Intravenous, in total 100 milligrams floxacillin per kilogram of body weight, daily, 3 to 4 doses in total.

Detailed description

For children under two years old, a quarter of the adult dose should be administered.

For children two to ten years old, half of the adult dose should be administered.

Regimen A: Oral, 250 milligrams floxacillin, 4 times daily.

Regimen B: Oral, 500 milligrams floxacillin, 4 times daily.

Regimen C: Oral, in total 8 grams floxacillin, daily, 3 to 4 doses in total.

Detailed description

250mg four times a day.

In serious infections, the dosage may be doubled.

Osteomyelitis, endocarditis – Up to 8g daily, in divided doses six to eight hourly.

125mg four times daily

For:

Oral, 125 milligrams floxacillin, 4 times daily.

62.5mg four times daily

For:

Dosage regimens

Oral, 62.5 milligrams floxacillin, 4 times daily.
