Parkinson's disease

Active Ingredient: Opicapone

Indication for Opicapone

Population group: only adults (18 years old or older)
Therapeutic intent: Adjunct intent

Opicapone is indicated as adjunctive therapy to preparations of levodopa/DOPA decarboxylase inhibitors (DDCI) in adult patients with Parkinson’s disease and end-of-dose motor fluctuations who cannot be stabilised on those combinations.

For this indication, competent medicine agencies globally authorize below treatments:

50 mg once daily

For:

Dosage regimens

Oral, 50 milligrams opicapone, once daily at the end of the day.

Detailed description

The recommended dose of opicapone is 50 mg. It should be taken once-daily at bedtime at least one hour before or after levodopa combinations.

Dose adjustments of antiparkinsonian therapy

Opicapone enhances the effects of levodopa. Hence, it is often necessary to adjust levodopa dosage within the first days to first weeks after initiating the treatment with opicapone.

Missed dose

If one dose is missed, the next dose should be taken as scheduled. The patient should not take an extra dose to make up for the missed dose.

Dosage considerations

The opicapone capsules should be swallowed whole with water.

Active ingredient

Opicapone

Opicapone is a peripheral, selective and reversible catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) inhibitor endowed with a high binding affinity (sub-picomolar). Opicapone is indicated as adjunctive therapy to preparations of levodopa/DOPA decarboxylase inhibitors (DDCI) in adult patients with Parkinson’s disease, leading to an increase of levodopa plasma levels thereby improving the clinical response to levodopa.
