Indication for Attenuated varicella-zoster virus

Population group: only adults (18 years old or older)
Therapeutic intent: Preventive action

Varicella-zoster virus is indicated for prevention of herpes zoster (“zoster” or shingles) and herpes zoster-related post-herpetic neuralgia (PHN).

It is indicated for immunization of individuals 50 years of age or older.

Dosage regimens

Regimen A: Subcutaneous, 19,400 plaque-forming units attenuated varicella-zoster virus, one dose.

Regimen B: Intramuscular, 19,400 plaque-forming units attenuated varicella-zoster virus, one dose.

Detailed description

Individuals should receive a single dose (0.65 mL).

After reconstitution, 1 dose (0.65 mL) contains: Varicella-zoster virus, Oka/Merck strain, (live, attenuated) not less than 19,400 PFU.

The need for a booster dose is not known.

Dosage considerations

The vaccine can be injected subcutaneously (SC) or intramuscularly (IM), preferably in the deltoid region.

The vaccine should be administered subcutaneously in patients with severe thrombocytopenia or any coagulation disorder.
