Indication for Ezetimibe

Population group: only children (1 year - 12 years old) , adolescents (12 years - 18 years old)
Therapeutic intent: Curative procedure

In combination with a statin as an adjunct to diet to reduce elevated LDL-C in pediatric patients 10 years of age and older with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (HeFH).

Oral, 10 milligrams ezetimibe, once daily.

Detailed description

The recommended dose is 10 mg once daily, administered with or without food.

If as dose is missed, take the missed dose as soon as possible. Do not double the next dose.

Assess LDL-C when clinically appropriate, as early as 4 weeks after initiating ezetimibe.

In patients taking a bile acid sequestrant, administer ezetimibe at least 2 hours before or 4 hours after the bile acid sequestrant.

Ezetimibe is in a new class of lipid-lowering compounds that selectively inhibit the intestinal absorption of cholesterol. The molecular target of ezetimibe is the sterol transporter, Niemann-Pick C1-Like 1 (NPC1L1), which is responsible for the intestinal uptake of cholesterol.
