Indication for Ibuprofen

Population group: only infants (40 days - 1 year old) , children (1 year - 12 years old) , adolescents (12 years - 18 years old) , adults (18 - 65 years old)
Therapeutic intent: Curative procedure

In adults and children over 12 years (>40 kg): Short term treatment of pain of mild to moderate intensity.

For this indication, competent medicine agencies globally authorize below treatments:

400 mg 1-4 times daily

Oral, 400 milligrams ibuprofen, 1 to 4 times daily.

Detailed description

400 mg one to four times daily, as needed. An interval of at least 4-6 hours should be allowed between doses. Single doses exceeding 400 mg have not been shown to have any additional analgesic effect.

Dosage considerations

It is recommended that patients with sensitive stomachs take ibuprofen tablet with food. If taken shortly after eating, the onset of action of ibuprofen tablet may be delayed. To be taken preferably with or after food, with plenty of fluid.

In case that patient age in months is > 3 and patient weight is > 5 kg, oral, 20 milligrams ibuprofen per kilogram of body weight, divided daily, 3 to 4 doses in total.

Regimen A: In case that patient age in months is ≥ 8 and patient age in months is ≤ 12 and patient weight is ≥ 7.5 kg and patient weight is ≤ 10 kg, rectal, 75 milligrams ibuprofen, 1 to 3 times daily. The maximum allowed total dose is 225 milligrams ibuprofen daily.

Regimen B: In case that patient age in years is ≥ 1 and patient age in years is ≤ 3 and patient weight is ≥ 10 kg and patient weight is ≤ 15 kg, rectal, 75 milligrams ibuprofen, 1 to 4 times daily. The maximum allowed total dose is 300 milligrams ibuprofen daily.

Regimen C: In case that patient age in years is ≥ 3 and patient age in years is ≤ 6 and patient weight is ≥ 15 kg and patient weight is ≤ 20 kg, rectal, 150 milligrams ibuprofen, 1 to 3 times daily. The maximum allowed total dose is 450 milligrams ibuprofen daily.

Regimen D: In case that patient age in years is ≥ 6 and patient age in years is ≤ 9 and patient weight is ≥ 20 kg and patient weight is ≤ 29 kg, rectal, 150 milligrams ibuprofen, 1 to 4 times daily. The maximum allowed total dose is 600 milligrams ibuprofen daily.

Detailed description

The dosage of for children and young persons depends on the patient’s age and body weight. In general, the single dose is 7 to 10 milligrams per kilogram body weight and the maximum daily dose 30 milligrams per kilogram body weight.

The dosage interval depends on the symptoms and the maximum daily dose and should be at least six hours.

If ibuprofen suppository is required for three days or if symptoms worsen, a doctor should be consulted.

The lowest effective dose should be used for the shortest duration necessary to relieve symptoms.
