Cetrimide Other names: Cetrimonium bromide Alkyltrimethylammonium bromide

Molecular mass: 284.544 g/mol  PubChem compound: 14250

Mechanism of action

Cetrimide is a quaternary ammonium cationic disinfectant with bactericidal activity against gram-positive and some gram-negative organisms. Cetrimide is relatively ineffective against viruses.

Pharmacodynamic properties

Studies with cetrimide have shown that it acts against a wide range of Gram+ positive and Gram- negative bacteria including Staphylococcus aureus, which is the most common cause of wound infection and burns. Certain Gram- negative bacteria and especially some Pseudomonas and Protease species remain the least susceptible to pathogenic bacteria in cetrimide and require a higher concentration than other species for effective action.

Pharmacokinetic properties

Cetrimide as a cationic active firmly attaches to the skin and other tissues and therefore absorption is insignificant.

No general pharmacological studies are available for the topical application of strimidide formulations.

Preclinical safety data

None.
