Therapeutic indications

Oxycodone is indicated for:

Severe pain which requires long-term opioid treatment

Population group: only adolescents (12 years - 18 years old) , adults (18 years old or older)

Oxycodone is indicated for the management of pain severe enough to require daily, around-the-clock, long-term opioid treatment.

Limitations of Use:

Because of the risks of addiction, abuse, and misuse with opioids, even at recommended doses, and because of the greater risks of overdose and death with extended-release opioid formulations, reserve oxycodone for use in patients for whom alternative treatment options (e.g., non-opioid analgesics or immediate-release opioids) are ineffective, not tolerated, or would be otherwise inadequate to provide sufficient management of pain.
Oxycodone is not indicated as an as-needed (prn) analgesic.

For this indication, competent medicine agencies globally authorize below treatments (click for details):

10 mg every 12 hours and thereafter 10-80 mg every 12 hours

5-15 mg every 4-6 hours as needed for pain

20 mg daily for patients already receiving and tolerating opioids for at least 5 consecutive days, with the possibility of a 25% increase of the current total daily dosage

5-15 mg every 4-6 hours as needed for pain

5 mg every 6 hours and thereafter 5 mg every 4-6 hours

1-10 mg over 1-2 min by intravenous bolus injection, 2 mg/hour by intravenous infusion and 0.03 mg/kg with a minimum lock–out time of 5 min in PCA

5 mg every 4 hours by subcutaneous bolus or 7.5 mg/day followed by titration according to symptom control

5 mg every 4 hours by subcutaneous bolus or 5 mg per day by subcutaneous infusion followed by titration according to symptom control

Contraindications

Oxycodone is contraindicated in the following cases:

Respiratory depression

Decreased respiratory function

Head injury

Injury of head

Paralytic ileus

Acute abdomen

Delayed gastric emptying

Chronic obstructive airways disease

Chronic obstructive lung disease

Cor pulmonale

Chronic bronchial asthma

Airway hyperreactivity

Hypercarbia

Hypercapnia

Chronic constipation

Moderate hepatic impairment, severe hepatic impairment

at least one of

Hepatic failure stage III
Hepatic failure stage IV

Severe renal impairment

at least one of

Renal failure stage 5: Kidney failure (GFR <15 mL/min/1.73 m2 or dialysis)

Monoamine oxidase inhibitors
