Therapeutic indications

Dexmedetomidine is indicated for:

Sedation level not deeper than arousal in response to verbal stimulation

Population group: only adults (18 years old or older)

For sedation of adult ICU (Intensive Care Unit) patients requiring a sedation level not deeper than arousal in response to verbal stimulation (corresponding to Richmond Agitation-Sedation Scale (RASS) 0 to -3).

For this indication, competent medicine agencies globally authorize below treatments (click for details):

0.7-1.4 μgr/kg/h

Procedural/awake sedation

Population group: only adults (18 years old or older)

For sedation of non-intubated adult patients prior to and/or during dianostic or surgical procedures requiring sedation, i.e. procedural/awake sedation.

For this indication, competent medicine agencies globally authorize below treatments (click for details):

0.2-1.0 μgr/kg/h

Contraindications

Dexmedetomidine is contraindicated in the following cases:

Heart block (grade 2 or 3)

at least one of

Second degree atrioventricular block
Complete atrioventricular block

Acute cerebrovascular conditions

Cerebrovascular disease
