Therapeutic indications

Mefloquine is indicated for:

Plasmodium falciparum malaria

Population group: only children (1 year - 12 years old) , adolescents (12 years - 18 years old) , adults (18 years old or older)

Mefloquine is especially indicated for therapy of plasmodium falciparum malaria in which the pathogen has become resistant to other antimalarial agents.

Following treatment of P. vivax malaria with mefloquine, relapse prophylaxis with an 8-amino-quinoline derivative, for example primaquine, should be considered in order to eliminate parasites in the hepatic phase.

Malaria chemoprophylaxis

Population group: only children (1 year - 12 years old) , adolescents (12 years - 18 years old) , adults (18 years old or older)

Malaria chemoprophylaxis with Lariam is particularly recommended for travellers to malarious areas in which multiply resistant P. falciparum strains occur.

Depression, generalised anxiety disorder, psychosis, suicide attempts, suicidal ideations, schizophrenia, convulsion
