Norethisterone Other names: Norethindrone 19-nor-17α-ethynyltestosterone

Chemical formula: C₂₀H₂₆O₂  Molecular mass: 298.419 g/mol  PubChem compound: 6230

Interactions

Norethisterone interacts in the following cases:

NSAIDs, vasodilators

Special care should be taken when progestogens are administered with other drugs which also cause fluid retention, such as NSAIDs and vasodilators.

Strong and moderate CYP3A4 inhibitors

Strong and moderate CYP3A4 inhibitors such as azole antifungals (e.g. itraconazole, voriconazole, fluconazole), verapamil, macrolides (e.g. clarithromycin, erythromycin), diltiazem and grapefruit juice can increase plasma concentrations of the estrogen or the progestin or both.

Cytotoxic drugs

When progestogens used in combination with cytotoxic drugs, it is possible that progestogens may reduce the haematological toxicity of chemotherapy.

Aminoglutethimide

Aminoglutethimide has been reported to decrease plasma levels of some progestogens.

Ciclosporin

Concurrent administration of ciclosporin and norethisterone has been reported to lead to increased plasma ciclosporin levels and/or decreased plasma norethisterone levels.

Pregnancy

The administration of norethisterone during pregnancy is contraindicated.

Nursing mothers

Norethisterone can pass into breast milk and therefore should be avoided during lactation.

Effects on ability to drive and use machines
