Therapeutic indications

Potassium iodide is indicated for:

Prevention of uptake of radioactive iodine in the thyroid after nuclear accidents

Population group: only minors (0 - 18 years old) , adults (18 years old or older)

For use after nuclear accidents with release of radioactive iodine isotopes to prevent the uptake of radioactive iodine in the thyroid after intake or inhalation of this substance.

For this indication, competent medicine agencies globally authorize below treatments (click for details):

100 mg once

For children 3-12 years old 50 mg once and for children 1 month to 3 years old 25 mg once

12.5 mg once for newborns younger than a month

Contraindications

Potassium iodide is contraindicated in the following cases:

Dermatitis herpetiformis van Dühring

Dermatitis herpetiformis

Hyperthyroidism

Hypocomplementaemic vasculitis

Thyroid carcinoma

Carcinoma of thyroid
