Therapeutic indications

Trimethoprim is indicated for:

Urinary and respiratory tract infections

Population group: only adolescents (12 years - 18 years old) , adults (18 years old or older)

Treatment of infections caused by trimethoprim-sensitive organisms including urinary and respiratory tract infections.

200 mg twice daily for 7-10 days

Prophylaxis of recurrent urinary tract infection

Population group: only adolescents (12 years - 18 years old) , adults (18 years old or older)

Trimethoprim susceptible species and additionally Recurrent urinary tract infection

For this indication, competent medicine agencies globally authorize below treatments (click for details):

100 mg once daily

Contraindications

Trimethoprim is contraindicated in the following cases:

Severe hepatic insufficiency

Hepatic failure stage IV

Pregnancy

Severe renal insufficiency unless plasma levels can be monitored regularly

at least one of

Renal failure stage 5: Kidney failure (GFR <15 mL/min/1.73 m2 or dialysis)
Renal dialysis

Megaloblastic anaemia and other blood dyscrasias

Blood disease

Fragile X chromosome

Porphyria
